OBSESSED

The movie “Obsessed” was the last movie to be written and directed by Mr. Bobby A. Suarez.

The story starts with twelve year old Carol Smith, witnessing the collapse of her parent's marriage.  Her mother crazed with jealous rage, berates her weak, philandering father who subsequently abandons them resulting to her mother's nervous breakdown.

Years have passed and we rejoin Carol, now a beautiful, self-contained seventeen year old young woman, who lives with bed-ridden mother, younger siblings Nick and Jiji and loyal servant, Ester, in a comfortable suburban home.  One thing is strange though, as she is the only one who can visit her mother's room.  Her mother has the propensity to be difficult, unappreciative old woman.  Strangely clairvoyant, for despite the fact that she has no other visitor beside Carol, she seems to know what’s going on her daughter’s life.

Carol is working clandestinely as a dancer-hostess at Club Andros, an unexpected job for an intelligent and talented university student.  Carol’s co workers, Pia, Lorna and Myrna often accompany her at “Claire’s Place” after work, and a close-in friendship has developed between them and Claire, the owner of the place.  Claire acts as a sort of “mother-confessor” to the much younger Carol and appears to be relaxed, wordily-wise woman who disapproves Carol’s job.

The plot takes a twist when Myrna was killed inside a motel and the unsuspected killer, Albert Croft, goes on the run.  Afterwards, Lorna was stabbed to death in Carol’s apartment and subsequently, Lt. Casey of the homicide department placed Carol as one of the suspects.

When the mother of Carol discovered the kind of job which Carol is into, Carol and her mother had a heated and screaming argument which the former turned to Claire for guidance. Claire advised Carol to look for another job and put her mother in the “home for the aged”, which Carol vehemently objected.  Carol’s dilemma are compounded when her professor found out about her being the most desired and the most expensive companion for a night at the club.  Pia was brutally slashed into an unrecognizable pulp in an alley near Carol’s house which unfortunately further worsens her trouble.

The story concludes as Carol, near mental collapse, is kidnapped by Albert and calls for Claire’s help.  The story takes a twist when Claire exposed who she really is by admitting that he is a man and the real killer and the bitter climax explodes in a church bell tower with Carol’s body being possessed by the mother’s spirit threw out Claire out of the bell tower window and plunges into his death hundreds of feet below.

We realized at the end of the movie that what Carol is seeing is only in her mind and only a “Psycho dream”, an obsession of immense proportions.  We realized that not only the father, but also the mother deserted Carol as a child, forcing her into a tough, soul destroying life on the mean streets and that her friendship with Claire is a sick and phony one.

As the film ends, we see that the hateful AIDS infected Claire (Andrew) is dead and that the spirit of Carol’s mother is now in peace and a new life opens up for Carol with the help of Lt. Casey and the love of Nick and Jiji, whose welfare had been her real obsession.
